Could Laser Eye Surgery Be Right for You?

Clear vision without glasses or contacts? It might sound too good to be true, but that’s exactly what laser eye surgery can offer. Many people with common vision problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, find that laser surgery provides excellent long-term outcomes.

Laser eye surgery can also be a big decision, so it’s best to understand the procedure before choosing it for yourself. Contact us and schedule your comprehensive eye exam to learn more about whether laser eye surgery is right for you.

Who Can Benefit from Laser Eye Surgery?

To be a good candidate for laser eye surgery, you must meet certain criteria. Your eyes must be in good health, with a stable prescription that is not too great. You must also be 18 years or older.

We can help you determine if you’re a good candidate for laser eye surgery during an evaluation and consultation.

How We Co-Manage Your Laser Eye Surgery

When you reach out to us for a consultation on laser eye surgery, we’ll conduct a thorough assessment to determine whether you’re a suitable candidate. Specifically, we will gather specific information about the following factors:

  • The thickness of your cornea
  • The stability of your vision
  • Your current prescription
  • Your personal and family medical history

If we determine that laser eye surgery is right for you, we’ll have a thorough discussion about what laser eye surgery can and can’t accomplish. That way, you’ll know what you can reasonably expect if you decide to go ahead with any laser eye surgery procedure.

We also schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your vision and support your healing process after the surgery. Regular follow-ups can help us prevent postoperative complications that could affect your recovery process.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

There are 2 primary types of laser eye surgery performed in Canada: LASIK and PRK. Both use a laser to reshape your cornea in a way that corrects your refractive error. However, they follow slightly different processes.

The recommended procedure will vary depending on your eyes, prescription, and needs. Click on each title to learn more about LASIK and PRK.

During LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), your ophthalmologist will create a minuscule flap in your cornea’s outer layer and fold it back to expose the middle layers. They will then reshape the cornea’s middle layers with a laser to correct any refractive errors and finish by carefully replacing the initial flap they created.

Most patients who undergo LASIK can see clearly within 24 hours and can expect their vision to stabilize within 2–3 months.

Patients with thin corneas may not be suitable candidates for LASIK surgery since complications can occur if the flap on the cornea’s outer layer comes loose after the procedure. PRK represents a possible alternative for people with thin corneas and others who are at higher risk for LASIK complications.

PRK surgery removes the cornea’s outer layer and reshapes the middle layers with an excimer laser. The ophthalmologist will place a contact lens bandage over the cornea to support healing. It can take 5 days or so to return to normal activities after PRK since the cornea’s outer layer requires time to repair itself, and full recovery can take up to 6 months.

Co-Management for Cataract Surgery

A cataract forms when the clear lens of your eye hardens and becomes cloudy. While cataracts are most commonly seen in people over the age of 60, other conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and autoimmune conditions, can cause the formation of cataracts at a younger age.

Regardless of the reason for your cataracts, if you find your vision affected, Bronte Village Eye Care can help. We offer cataract management and surgery co-management options.

In the early stages, a cataract may not significantly affect your vision. We will continue to monitor your eyes and update your prescription as necessary. However, as a cataract progresses, it may begin to interfere with your daily activities. In this case, we will recommend cataract surgery. This involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear lens implant.

We will provide support, a referral to a local ophthalmologist, and continued monitoring throughout the healing process.
