Preventive Care for Strong, Healthy Eyes
Did you know that eye exams check for more than just your glasses prescription? While we will check your refraction to determine your prescription, comprehensive eye exams do so much more than that.
Routine eye exams are an essential part of preventive health care. In some cases, a comprehensive eye exam can also uncover other health concerns that may seem unrelated to your eyes, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
Ultimately, our goal is to prevent or detect ocular disease and eye conditions that cause vision loss or blindness. We rely on vision to navigate the world, and as such, vision loss can severely impact our quality of life.

Why Are Eye Exams So Important?
Many eye diseases, like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy, develop with no early symptoms. Therefore, they can cause irreversible damage to your eyes and vision before you even know there’s a problem.
Undergoing regular eye exams can help prevent, slow, and manage these conditions to preserve your vision.
When Do I Need an Eye Exam?
Although some patients are at higher risk for developing eye diseases, everyone should undergo routine exams regardless of their age, health, or eyesight. We follow the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommended exam schedule:
- Adults aged 20–64 should have an eye exam every 2 years.
- Adults aged 65 or older should have an eye exam every year.
However, every situation is unique. We’ll let you know if we recommend a different schedule based on your needs. Children should follow their own recommended eye exam schedule.
What to Expect from a Comprehensive Eye Exam
Every comprehensive eye exam at Bronte Village Eye Care typically includes:
- A thorough review and discussion of your current and past visual problems, your overall health, current medications, work environment, hobbies, and family health history.
- A visual acuity test to check your ability to see at varying distances.
- A refraction test to determine your current prescription and whether you need corrective lenses.
- A binocular vision and motility test to determine how well your eyes work together, their alignment, and their range of motion. We’ll also test your depth perception and eye focusing ability.
- A pupil reflex test to see how your eyes react to light.
- A tonometry test to check the internal pressure of your eye. This is an important tool that checks for glaucoma.
- An anterior segment health exam using a slit lamp microscope to evaluate your eyelids, lashes, cornea, and ocular lens. This test is essential for detecting dry eye, corneal degeneration, blepharitis, and cataracts.
- A posterior segment health exam using fundus photography. This exam evaluates the health of your retina, optic nerve head, macula, and blood vessels, and is crucial in detecting eye diseases and conditions that affect the retina and back of the eye.
Technology-Powered Eye Care
Our diagnostic technology enhances our ability to detect potential concerns before they become serious conditions. During your eye exam, you’ll notice various technologies being used to check different parts of your vision or eye health.
From our fundus photography, which captures clear images of the back of your eye, to our OCT scans that measure your retinal health and visual field testing that tracks your peripheral (side) vision, each device used during your exam has a specific purpose in protecting your eye health.
The devices used in your exam may vary from appointment to appointment or between different members of your family. This is because we tailor the testing to the needs of each individual, depending on their age, risk factors, and any visual concerns they have mentioned. If you have any questions about the technology used in your exam, feel free to ask us!
